Responsibilities of Membership
Rotary club membership carries with it certain responsibilities.

  • Members are expected to attend weekly programs of the club. Opportunities to make up attendance include attending the regular meeting of another Rotary club, attending various other Rotary meetings, or attending a club service project authorized by the club board of directors.
  • Members are required to pay annual dues to their clubs, their districts, and to Rotary International.
  • Members are expected to participate in local or international activities or projects of the Rotary club.
  • Clubs encourage members to aspire to leadership or committee roles within their clubs.

Becoming a Rotarian
An association of some 31,000 autonomous clubs in 166 countries, Rotary International is one of the world's largest service organizations.
With 350 members, the Rotary Club Of Bombay is one of the world's largest and most prestigious Rotary clubs.
The goal for the 's membership is an up-to-date and progressive representation of the community's business, vocational, and professional leaders.
An important distinction between Rotary and other organizations is that membership in Rotary is by invitation. The invites individuals to join and become members.
Membership is vital to the 's operations and community service activities. A primary goal of the club is to continually expand the club with committed members who have the interest and ability to get involved in service and humanitarian projects. Prospective members must
:

  • Hold - or be retired from - a professional, proprietary, executive, or managerial position;
  • Have the capacity to meet the club's weekly attendance or community project participation requirements;
  • Llive or work within the locality of the club or the surrounding area. . Meet the criteria of being a leader in his business or profession, or if below 40 have demonstrated the potential to be a future leader.

The membership process
Often a person being considered for membership is invited by a member/sponsor to attend one or more club meetings to learn more about the . The sponsor may then submit the name of the candidate to the club's membership committee.
An individual who is interested in membership but doesn't know any Rotarians can contact the club directly. The Membership Development Committee will evaluate the individual and sponsor the individual for membership.

A quick and efficient procedure to evaluate and accept or turn down candidates has been set out and is follows:

  • The name of the candidate must be proposed to the club by the Chairman of membership development committee or by an active member .
  • The proposer fills up the membership proposal form and submits it to the
    Board of Directors.
  • The Board after scrutinizing sends the proposal form to the classifications and the membership committees.
  • The classification committee ensures that the prospective member's business or profession is covered by the classification loaned to him and the membership committee evaluates the candidate from the stand-point of character, business and social standing.
  • The membership committee and the classifications committee then report their findings to the Board.
  • If the reports are favourable and the Board approves them, the proposer is requested to bring the candidate to the Rotary Information meeting, where the candidate is imparted with the benefits of Rotary offers to its members and what Rotary expects in return.
  • The candidate is then asked whether he would like to become a member of the club, and, if so, he is willing to have his application published to the club members.
  • If there are no written objections received within 7 days, the candidate is accepted as a member as soon as he pays his membership dues.
  • The finale comes when the candidate is formally introduced by his proposer and is inducted as a new member at a regular meeting of the club.

This procedure applies for the active membership only, whereas Honorary member is elected by the Board for his accomplishments in furthering the ideals of Rotary. He has no vote, pays no dues, no classification loaned, and not eligible to hold office in the club. He can attend meetings only of the club that elected him.
